More than 26% of all adults in the United States meet the criterion for having a mental disease.  There may be 450 million persons suffering from mental disease worldwide. The top 10 leading causes of disease worldwide, including major depression, place it at number four. The world's biggest cause of sickness is expected to be mental disorder by 2029. Ten to twenty million people attempt suicide each year, and one million people actually succeed. According to a World Health Organization (WHO) assessment, the global cost of mental illness was over $2.5 trillion (including indirect expenses accounting for two-thirds of this amount) in 2010 and is expected to rise to over $6 trillion by 2030.

According to data from the WHO, roughly half of the world's population suffers from a mental disease that affects their capacity to maintain healthy relationships, feel good about themselves, and carry out daily tasks.  A person's physical and mental well-being are interrelated. The inability to make wise decisions and substance use disorders are just two issues that can arise from poor mental health.
